Heating with wood is a great do it yourself heating option, but its not for everyone.  Growing up with wood heat I have an inside track on the pro’s and con’s to wood burners being a viable home heating option.

Installing a wood burning stove is one of the easier do it yourself projects when it comes to home heating.  It is pretty straight forward and even if you elect to hire a contractor to install a wood burner it won’t cost all that much.

The thing is with a stand alone infrared heater, its simple for anyone to set up.  Simple, meaning plug the thing in!  It doesn’t get any more diy friendly than that.

Infrared heaters are a secondary heat source though, they basically take the air in and blow it out at a higher temperature.  The infrared heater I use is very economical and sells for under $400 not bad given the savings on home heating costs.

Do It Yourself Home Heating Options

If your home already has a primary furnace or heating source, I’d say the infrared heater has to be one of the very best do it yourself home heating options, give one a try.

Wood heat is great, its a warm heat that is much different than gas fired furnaces that most people are accustomed to. The problem with wood heat as a sound diy home heating option is the impact it has on anyone with asthma or allergies.  Wood heat is bad for those who suffer from asthma, if you have asthma, a wood burner installed in your home will give you problems, trust me on that one.

Installing a wood burner will usually require you to pass through your ceiling and roof or a wall. Installing a wood burner is a good project for hiring a professional, but if your a do it yourself type, you could install the wood burner in a day or less.

A good point to remember when installing a wood burner is the actual placement of the unit. Make sure it is not too close to the floor or walls. Wood burning installation instructions will usually come with the unit. Typically when installing a wood burner you will want to stay clear of any surrounding walls by 3′ or more.
